Rohingya boat capsize: Case filed, 6 arrested

Police have filed a case over the boat capsize in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar while it was illegally crossing the sea to Malaysia.

Six people have been arrested in the case, our Cox’s Bazar staff correspondent reports quoting Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Hafizur Rahman.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Baharchhara Police Investigation Centre Husne Mubarak filed the case last night.

In the case, police accused 30 identified and 10 to 15 unidentified people. Shahid Ullah, son of Hasan Ali of Katabania village in Teknaf was made the prime accused in the case.

Police are trying to nab the other accused. The rescued Rohingyas are being sent to their camps, the OC said.

At least four people including a child died as a Malaysia-bound trawler carrying Rohingya refugees capsized off the coast of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar yesterday (October 4, 2022) morning.

According to some survivors, the refugees were being trafficked to Malaysia by a local syndicate.
