‘Suicidal’ to stay unpreparared amid India-Pakistan war tensions: Yunus

Chief Adviser of the interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus has said the current tension between India and Pakistan is alarming, and that not being prepared in such a situation would be “suicidal” for Bangladesh.
“We live in a world where the threat of war is ever-present. The India-Pakistan situation remains extremely volatile,” Yunus said on Wednesday during a visit to the Bangladesh Air Force exercise at Bir Uttam AK Khandakar base in Dhaka.
“This morning I saw news—possibly rumours—that the war could start today. Not preparing for such a situation would be suicidal. There is no place for half-preparedness.”
He emphasized the importance of readiness as a neighbouring country and said, “Bangladesh too must remain alert and prepared.”
Describing himself as “anti-war,” Yunus said, “We do not wish for war anywhere in the world.” He strongly objected to the belief that preparing for war makes it more likely, stating that such assumptions are misguided.
Yunus reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a modern air force capable of defending the country’s sovereignty and independence.
“The effort to build a modern air force that can respond to any challenge to our sovereignty and freedom will continue,” he said.
Calling patriotism and professionalism the foundations of a secure Bangladesh, Yunus urged air force members to continue developing their skills and enhancing their technical capacity. “We must remain focused on acquiring timely capabilities,” he said.
“With our collective efforts, we will build a safe, strong, and developed Bangladesh.”
Yunus also assured that the government would provide full support for the future induction of advanced fighter jets, aircraft carriers, and radar systems.
He noted that in a fast-changing technological world, high-quality training is essential. “The Bangladesh Air Force is actively participating in multidimensional training programmes to stay updated with modern knowledge and skills,” he said.
He thanked air force members responsible for airport security and operations.
Highlighting the significance of military drills, he said, “Exercises like this are not just simulations—they demonstrate professionalism and preparedness in defence of our sovereignty.”
Yunus said the air force, under timely planning and visionary leadership, is working not only to ensure effective air defence but also to safeguard the country’s maritime zones amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
Earlier, Yunus was received at the air base by Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan and given a formal salute by a ceremonial unit of the Bangladesh Air Force.
