The United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) has expressed concern over the harassment of Nurul Kabir, editor of the English-language daily New Age and president of the Editors’ Council.

In a statement sent to the media on Friday (December 19), UPDF Vice-President Nuton Kumar Chakma said the incident took place when Nurul Kabir went to help journalists who were trapped during attacks, vandalism and arson at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.

The statement linked the unrest to the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot in public in Dhaka and later died in Singapore while undergoing treatment.

Chakma said the daylight shooting of Hadi, his subsequent death during treatment, and the violence and “mob” attacks in different parts of the country—including assaults on the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star—were “deeply alarming”.

He also described the attack and harassment of Nurul Kabir as a matter of serious concern, and said the interim government and law enforcement agencies could not evade responsibility.

The UPDF demanded immediate legal action against those involved in the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi and those responsible for the attack and harassment of Nurul Kabir, the statement said.
