Five farmers abducted in Teknaf; three rescued

Five farmers were abducted in Pankhali and Marichaghona areas of Hnila union of Teknaf upazila in the early hours of Thursday (September 29, 2022).

Three of them have been rescued, while the rest two – identified as Nazir Ahmed, son of late Ula Mia, and his son Mohammad Hossain of Pankhali area of Hnila union –are still missing.

Families of the victims and local public representatives said the five farmers went to work in the paddy field early in the morning on Thursday.

Out of nowhere, some seven to 10 people appeared, abducted them and demanded a ransom of Tk five lakh from each of their families.

Because they did not get the ransom, the abductors shot farmer Shahjahan and beat up farmers Abu Bakar and Mehedi Hasan.

They were later rescued by their relatives and hospitalised.

Rescued Shahjahan is being treated at Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, while rescued Abu Bakar and his son Mehedi Hasan have been admitted to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.

Hnila Union Parishad Chairman Rashed Mahmud Ali said he has reported the abduction to Teknaf Police Station.

Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf Model Police Station, said he was informed of the incident by the local chairman but no case has yet been filed.
