An attempted abduction of a construction worker by suspected members of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was thwarted by labourers and local residents in Ramgarh upazila of Khagrachari on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 2 pm in the Sonaiaagha area, where a government road carpeting project is being implemented under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).

According to contractor Md. Nurul Hossain Nuru, two individuals allegedly affiliated with the UPDF arrived on a motorcycle and confronted site staff member Md Zahir. The suspects reportedly questioned why construction work was proceeding without their permission and attempted to forcibly take Zahir with them.

Witnesses said the labourers and local villagers intervened, throwing bricks and chasing the suspects away. The attackers fled the scene by motorcycle.

Following the incident, personnel from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) conducted patrols in the area.

The contractor said the incident has triggered concern among both Bengali and indigenous residents of Sonaiaagha village. Locals have stated they will not tolerate any obstruction to development activities and have pledged to resist future threats or acts of intimidation.
