Ctg depot fire: Two firefighters, from Rangamati, killed

Two of the firefighters who died trying to douse an inferno at an inland container depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong hail from Rangamati.

They are Mithu  Dewan, 50, a native of Rangamati’s West Tribal area, and Nipon, from Mantripara in the city’s College Gate area.

Mithu worked at Kumira Fire Service Station. He had rejoined work on Saturday, June 04, 2022, after a 12-day vacation. The station was the first to send out units to the inferno.

He was the sole earner of the family, which also consisted of his wife and a daughter.

Nipon worked at Sitakunda Fire Service Station and his team was the second to arrive at the scene on the night of the deadly blaze.

He is survived by his wife, Sumona Chakma, and two daughters – one studying in college and the other in the sixth grade.

The Fire Service and Civil Defense headquarters has published a list of its personnel who were killed during the depot fire and who have remained missing since then, on Monday evening, June 06, 2022.

According to them, they have so far been able to recover the bodies of nine of their personnel while three others have remained missing.

Several firefighters wounded in the inferno are still hospitalised, fire service officials say.

On Monday, June 6, 2022, the district administration and the health authorities in Chattogram revised the death toll in the inferno, lowering it to 41.
