7 held with 1.2 lakh pieces of yaba tablets in St Martin’s

Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested seven people in possession of 102,000 pieces of yaba tablets during a raid near St Martin’s in the Bay of Bengal.

The arrested have been identified as Rohingyas Hamid Hossain, Hossain Johar, Md Jobayer, Lal Mohammad, Md Yasin, hailing from Bangladesh Rohingya camps, and Bangladeshi citizens Bashir Ahmed and Md Alam hailing from Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf.

Acting on a tip-off, sources said, a team of coast guards led by Bangladesh Coast Guard St Martin’s Station Commander Lieutenant Raiyan Alam conducted a special raid in the seas east of Saint Martin around 10:45am on Monday (April 25).

During the raid, the coast guard team signaled to a fishing boat to stop as its movement looked suspicious. But the boat would not stop and tried to flee.

The coast guard team then chased and captured the boat.

After searching through the boat, they recovered 102,000 pieces of yaba tablets and arrested seven drug traffickers.

Lieutenant Commander Labib Usama Ahmed Ullah, a media officer at Bangladesh Coast Guard Headquarters, said the recovered yaba tablets, the wooden boat used in the drug trafficking and the arrested drug traffickers have been handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station to follow up on this.
